HTC Desire S Android Smartphone Announced

HTC refreshed the HTC Desire which was one if its most popular smartphones with HTC Desire S. It is very similar to its predecessor but is 5 grams lighter and the optical trackball has been ditched. There are some improvements in hardware as well with increased internal phone storage from 512 MB to 1.1 GB, RAM has been increased to from 576 MB to 768 MB but the 3.7 inch screen with resolution of 480 x 800 px and the 1 GHz processor remain the same as with Desire. It is also good hear that its 3G data speed has been increased to 14.4 Mbps for download and 5.76 Mbps for upload. Multimedia fans will also be happy to hear that HTC added a front-facing camera for video chat and expanded the video codec support to include .avi and .xvid so there will be no need to convert most of the movies that you downloaded.

As for the software it will come with Google Android Gingerbread 2.4 with HTC Sense UI layer running on top. The HTC Desire S is shapping up to be good upgrade over the original HTC Desire but improvements with the OS will probably not be good enough to really challenge Apple’s iPhone product range. It will become available sometime in Q2 2011 and you can expect it to be free on contract from £35/month like its predecessor HTC Desire when it was released. Until then check the videos, photos and full specifications below.
