The first iPad rejuvenated the tablet market so we can now choose from dozens of different tablets which vary in sizes, features and operating systems but none came close to the success of the iPad. There were a lot of rumours about the Apple iPad 2 and now Apple finally unveiled it yesterday. At first glance of the iPad 2 it becomes clear that this is an evolution not a revolution like its predecessor and that’s not a bad thing as the iPad was a great device but the competition caught up and even surpassed in certain areas. Now Apple struck back with a 1 GHz dual core A5 processor that is up to 2x times faster and up 9x times faster graphics compared to its older brother.
Regardless of the speed increase Apple managed to slim it down by 30% down to 8.8 mm and only 600 grams. Luckily that strict diet did note affect the battery life as the iPad 2 is still good for 10 hours of use on a single charge. Another noteworthy upgrades are front and rear facing cameras that support video calls via FaceTime, 1080p HDMI output (via $39 dongle) and a screen cover to protect your iPad 2 from scratches without adding the bulk of standard cases. The price of the plastic covers will be £39 while leather ones will sell for $69.
The screen size and resolution remained the same and the pricing as well with 16 GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2 retailing at $499 and with top model 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G iPad 2 going for $829. We guess that in the UK pricing will be the same as well with base model starting at £429. The iPad 2 will be available in black or white and will go on sale on 25 March in Apple Stores in UK. I guess we should get ready for photos and videos of people queuing in front of stores for hours to get their hands on the latest tablet from Apple.
