The Asus EeePC 1001-MU17 is a solid effort from the company that started the netbook craze. It has a very nice keyboard and exceptionally well-adjusted touchpad - factors often overlooked in the netbook purchasing equation. While not ostentatious, it's still sedately handsome, and if you regularly need quick access to the web, the Express Gate can be handy indeed.

In some respects, we like the $329 ASUS Eee PC 1001P better than the longer-lasting 1005PE-P, which costs $50 more. Not only does the 1001P pleasingly avoid fingerprints, but the keyboard feels larger, too. The $399 Toshiba mini NB305 may still be our favorite netbook overall, but if you can live with a smaller hard drive and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, you're getting a great bargain.

The Eee PC 1001P is the basic model of Asus's Pine Trail netbooks. It doesn't have a Bluetooth module and only has a 160 GB hard drive. But it does show us what the new netbook platform is capable of: eleven hours of battery life using all possible energy-saving options, and six hours whilst surfing the web. However, Asus has achieved such long battery life at the cost of screen brightness, which is kept artificially low. As with several Eee PCs before it, the matt display's brightness is severely limited, just to save some more Watts for the battery. This makes the screen unusable in strong sunlight.
